Estrogens are fat soluble hormones and must be made water soluble to be excreted and to maintain a normal hormonal balance. The proportion between estrogen metabolites (2-hydroxyestrone/16-hydroxy-estrone) is a reliable indicator of hormonal balance both in women and in men. This proportion affects health of specific tissues such as breasts, endometrium, prostate, etc. Ineffective elimination of these metabolites has ill effects on gynecological tissues.
The Brassicaceae or cabbage family (including broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, (...)) contains substances which have shown to support estrogen metabolism by avoiding an estrogen surplus and to maintain normal estrogen levels.
It is especially the substances indol-3-carbinol and di-indolmethane (from glucosinolate hydrolysis) which modify cytochrome P450 enzyme activity resulting in a higher 2-hydroxy-estrogen production and normalization of the estrogen balance.
Flaxseed extract (Linum usitatissimum) contains lignans, an important group of phytoestrogens which inhibit the aromatase enzyme. The aromatase enzyme causes male hormones to convert to estrogens. In flaxseed there are also lignans which can increase SHBG, thus decreasing the amount of unbound or free circulating estrogens (and especially harmful metabolites).
Reduced glutathione is the major liver antioxidant (detoxificant) and seems to be chronically deficient in all tumoural stages. It is essential to the synthesis and repair of mistakes in copying the DNA.
