Description of Master-AO
“Antioxidant” is a classification of several organic substances that deactivate free radicals. Free radicals are the natural by-products within and among cells, but they can be caused as well by for example air pollution, chemical products in the environment, rays (UV, X), alcohol abuse (exogenous factors) or by for instance disease, intensive physical exercise, a shortage of sleep (endogenous factors).
Reduced glutathion is as indicated by the product name the most powerful or master antioxidant in the body (as much as 100 times more powerful than vitamin C and E). That is because glutathion can neutralize both water and fat soluble toxins and because the activity of other antioxidants such as vitamin A, C, E, selenium, etc. depends on the availability of glutathion. Moreover, glutathion activates the p53, the tumor suppressor gene.
Lack of glutathion leads to premature ageing, cancer, immune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, etc. through lipid peroxidation, protein and DNA oxidation, damage to membranes and lysosomes and lipofuscine accumulation.
Oxidized glutathion is converted into reduced glutathion by anthocyanes (from grape skin) [REDOX shuttle].
Glutathion is a protein consisting of the three amino acids glutamine, glycine and cysteine; one of glutathion’s precursors is present in the formula: Lcysteine. Adding L-cysteine has the advantage of stimulating the body to produce glutathion. In addition, L-cysteine is an important sulphur source which plays a prominent role in detoxification.
A lack of folic acid is often diagnosed in case of exhausted adrenals.
Adding selenium methionine, the most important trace element of glutathion-S-transferase, improves the activity of the enzyme. The enzyme glutathionS-transferase is a ubiquitous multifunctional enzyme which plays a key role in cellular detoxification.
